A few years ago, you would find ZERO live plants in my home. I didn’t want to take care of them and was afraid they wouldn’t make it. LOL! But then I started learning about the benefits they bring into a home. And now I’m hooked! I’m always looking for where I can fit another one. Mine are all pretty low maintenance. I have them in literally every room. They’re kind of like my sourdough starter – I love taking care of them and watching them grow!
Plants go into a bit of hibernation mode during the winter, and begin more growth during Spring. Which makes now a perfect time to bring some new ones home!!
Here are a few things I love:
- Propagating them to gift new plant babies to friends (I keep THESE ‘you grow girl’ on-hand and stick in new plants when I gift them!)
- The life, warmth + color they add to the house
- They’re a natural mood booster and can have positive effects on anxiety
- They clean up our air. As natural air filters, they leave the home air cleaner and healthier.
The studies on their ability to clean toxins from our air AND impact our mood are fascinating! I love the plant food fertilizer from Happy Happy Houseplant HERE. It’s super easy and I just add to my watering can.

DIY Plant Spray
Here’s my favorite DIY plant spray recipe. If you just want to keep the leaves shiny and clean, you can use a regular spray bottle of diluted Thieves Cleaner. BUT, I add some essential oils to mine to help prevent pests in both indoor and outdoor plants.
Add to a 16-oz spray bottle:
- 1 capful Thieves Cleaner
- 15 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 15 drops Purification essential oil blend
- 15 drops Rosemary essential oil
- Fill the rest with water
Then I spray the leaves and/or soil weekly. You can check out my plant spray favorites HERE (and if you are a new customer, you can use my code SHAREYL to save 10% on your first order!).
So hit up your local nursery and fill up your space. They just add a little happiness, and who doesn’t want more of that, right? If you can’t find what you’re looking for, I’ve ordered a few times from The Sill and always been happy with them!
And fresh flowers? All. The. Yes. You deserve them too, sister!
